Binarly Research to Present Firmware Security Innovations at Inaugural Re//verse Conference

Los Angeles, California --- January 14, 2025 --  Binarly, a leader in firmware and software supply chain security, is excited to announce its participation in the upcoming RE//verse Conference, where our award-winning research team will showcase groundbreaking advancements in firmware security and embedded systems analysis.

Two standout presentations from the Binarly research team will highlight innovative approaches to addressing some of the most pressing challenges in cybersecurity:

  • Takahiro Haruyama will explore novel detection methodologies for UEFI bootkits, a growing firmware threat known for its persistence and ability to evade conventional security tools. The presentation will showcase findings from the research team’s in-depth study of existing bootkits -- including Lojax, MosaicRegressor, MoonBounce, CosmicStrand, ESPecter, and BlackLotus -- where we identified common code characteristics such as hook chains, persistence mechanisms, and other distinctive features. Leveraging these insights, Binarly developed the methodology for generic detection techniques based on code similarity.
  • Lukas Seidel will unveil SAFIREFUZZ, a high-performance framework for rehosting and fuzzing embedded ARM firmware. By leveraging near-native emulation techniques, Seidel will discuss the research team’s approach to enhancing fuzzing throughput and code coverage to create a powerful tool for analyzing embedded systems with unprecedented efficiency.

“Our internal research team is the backbone of our mission,” said Alex Matrosov, CEO and Head of Research at Binarly. “These public research projects confirm that our detection technologies are the best on the market. A strong research team isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s proof that a product and its creators can detect real threats and deliver real value to customers. Without this foundation, promises fall flat, and expectations go unmet,” Matrosov added.
